03 / The year in context

What this schedule asks of you

The 2018 CR-V splits its lineup between the turbocharged 1.5L on most trims and the carryover 2.4L on the LX. The Maintenance Minder times services on both, typically landing oil changes near 7,500 miles of mixed use, with the usual Honda sub-items for filters, CVT fluid, plugs, and coolant.

The ownership question that matters on this generation is oil dilution on the 1.5L turbo. In cold climates with short trips, fuel can thin the oil enough to raise the level on the dipstick. The practical defense is simple: shorter winter oil intervals, a monthly dipstick check, and attention to any gasoline smell in the oil.

Everything else is standard fifth-generation Honda practice: three-year brake fluid, Honda-specific CVT and differential fluids, chain-driven engines with no belt line, and consumables that any parts store stocks deeply.

Shorter intervals

Do you use the severe schedule?

Frequent short trips, towing, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, and long idling shorten the intervals. The severe column in the table above shows by how much; the toggle in the mileage check applies it.

04 / Worth knowing

Before you book service

  • 01

The 1.5L turbo on EX and above had a documented oil-dilution issue in cold climates: gasoline thinning the oil and raising the dipstick level. Honda extended the powertrain warranty in affected states. Short-trip winter drivers should change oil early and watch the level.

  • 02

The LX kept the naturally aspirated 2.4L K24 through 2019, so two very different engines live under one model name. Confirm which one you have before buying filters or plugs.

  • 03

Both engines are chain driven and both run the CVT on HCF-2 fluid. The rear differential on AWD trucks takes Dual Pump Fluid II about every 30,000 miles.

  • 04

The K24 LX engine keeps screw-type valve adjusters; plan a valve inspection with the plugs. The turbo engine does not need one.

05 / Cost outlook

What routine service may cost

Estimated from this schedule over five years or 60,000 miles of normal driving. Parts, labor rates, location, and condition all move the total; treat these as planning figures.

5 years / 60K at a shop $1,250 to $2,800 Independent shop rates
DIY parts estimate $440 to $1,150 Routine items only

08 / Common questions

2018 CR-V service answers

01 How often does a 2018 Honda CR-V need an oil change?

The published interval is every 7,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under severe conditions such as short trips, towing, dust, or extreme temperatures, the interval drops to 3,750 miles.

02 Does the 2018 Honda CR-V have a timing belt or a timing chain?

Every available engine, the 1.5L I4 Turbo (L15BE) and the 2.4L I4 (K24V, LX trim), uses a timing chain. There is no scheduled timing belt replacement.

03 What oil does the 2018 Honda CR-V take, and how much?

1.5L I4 Turbo (L15BE): 0W-20, 3.7 quarts with filter. 2.4L I4 (K24V, LX trim): 0W-20, 4.4 quarts with filter. Confirm the grade printed in the owner's manual before buying.

04 When do the spark plugs need to be replaced on a 2018 Honda CR-V?

The schedule calls for spark plugs every 100,000 miles. Minder sub-item 4, typically near 100,000 miles with iridium plugs.

05 Does the 2018 Honda CR-V ever need CVT fluid changes?

Plan on CVT fluid every 50,000 miles, or 25,000 miles under severe use. Use Honda HCF-2 only. Minder sub-item 3; severe use and towing move it near 25,000 miles.

06 When does the 2018 Honda CR-V need a coolant change?

Engine coolant is first due at 100,000 miles, then every 50,000 miles. The specified coolant is Honda Type 2 (blue).

07 What extra maintenance does the AWD CR-V need?

The driveline adds its own fluids: differential gear oil and, where fitted, transfer case fluid. They are inexpensive services with long intervals under normal use, and much shorter ones under towing or off-road duty. The schedule table lists each with its interval.

08 What counts as severe service for the 2018 Honda CR-V?

Repeated trips under about five miles, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic in heat, dusty or gravel roads, towing, and sustained sub-freezing starts. If a few of those describe a typical week, use the severe column in the table above; most manufacturers write their fine print around exactly that kind of driving.
