03 / The year in context
The 2016 Equinox closes out the second generation with a 2.4L four or 3.6L V6 and a 6-speed automatic. The published schedule is standard GM fare: Oil Life System with a 7,500-mile ceiling, 45,000-mile air filter, 97,500-mile plugs, and Dexcool on a five-year clock.
The reason this page exists is the 2.4L oil story. Enough of these engines consumed oil that GM extended coverage on internal parts, and the practical takeaway for any owner is simple: check the dipstick monthly, top up with dexos1-licensed 5W-30, and document consumption if it appears. Catching a hungry engine early is the difference between rings and a replacement engine.
Aside from that watch item, the truck is inexpensive to run. Filters and brakes are commodity parts, the V6 asks only for deeper plug labor, and the severe schedule only matters for the minority that tow.
Shorter intervals
Frequent short trips, towing, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, and long idling shorten the intervals. The severe column in the table above shows by how much; the toggle in the mileage check applies it.
Check severe-use timing04 / Worth knowing
The 2.4L Ecotec has a documented oil-consumption history serious enough that GM issued extended special coverage for piston rings on several years. Check the level monthly and investigate consumption above a quart per 2,000 miles.
Earlier 2.4L engines also had timing chain wear issues, improved by these years but worth a listen: rattle on cold start deserves diagnosis, not hope.
The 3.6L V6 sidesteps both concerns and adds a quart of oil capacity; its plugs are buried deeper, so plug labor runs higher.
AWD models carry a rear drive module whose fluid the schedule only inspects; change it if the vehicle tows or has crossed 60,000 miles on the original fill.
The 2016 facelift updated the nose and interior trim without touching the powertrain or its intervals.
05 / Cost outlook
Estimated from this schedule over five years or 60,000 miles of normal driving. Parts, labor rates, location, and condition all move the total; treat these as planning figures.

08 / Common questions
The published interval is every 7,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under severe conditions such as short trips, towing, dust, or extreme temperatures, the interval drops to 5,000 miles.
Every available engine, the 2.4L I4 Ecotec (LEA) and the 3.6L V6 (LFX), uses a timing chain. There is no scheduled timing belt replacement.
2.4L I4 Ecotec (LEA): 5W-30, 5 quarts with filter. 3.6L V6 (LFX): 5W-30, 6 quarts with filter. Confirm the grade printed in the owner's manual before buying.
The schedule calls for spark plugs every 97,500 miles.
Plan on automatic transmission fluid every 97,500 miles, or 45,000 miles under severe use. Severe covers towing, plowing, and sustained hot-climate hauling.
Engine coolant is due every 150,000 miles. The specified coolant is Dexcool (orange).
The driveline adds its own fluids: differential gear oil and, where fitted, transfer case fluid. They are inexpensive services with long intervals under normal use, and much shorter ones under towing or off-road duty. The schedule table lists each with its interval.
Repeated trips under about five miles, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic in heat, dusty or gravel roads, towing, and sustained sub-freezing starts. If a few of those describe a typical week, use the severe column in the table above; most manufacturers write their fine print around exactly that kind of driving.
