03 / The year in context
The 2015 Silverado 1500 sits in the K2XX generation with the EcoTec3 engine family and a schedule paced by the Oil Life System. Treat 7,500 miles as the oil ceiling, rotate every 7,500, and plan around long horizons elsewhere: 45,000-mile air filters, 97,500-mile plugs, and five-year Dexcool.
The two ownership issues worth naming are both drivetrain. Active Fuel Management on the V8s can consume oil and, at the extreme, drop a lifter, so oil level discipline matters more here than on most trucks. And the 8-speed, where fitted, has a known shudder with an equally known fluid-exchange fix.
Worked trucks belong on the severe schedule, which pulls the transmission and axle services from 97,500 miles down to 45,000. For a pavement commuter, this generation is inexpensive to run and every part is stocked everywhere.
Shorter intervals
Frequent short trips, towing, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, and long idling shorten the intervals. The severe column in the table above shows by how much; the toggle in the mileage check applies it.
Check severe-use timing04 / Worth knowing
The 5.3L and 6.2L run Active Fuel Management, and AFM lifter failures plus oil consumption are the best-known weaknesses of this truck. A monthly dipstick check is not optional on high-mileage examples.
Trucks with the 8L90 8-speed developed a well-documented torque converter shudder. The published fix is a full exchange to the updated low-viscosity ATF; if the truck shudders at light throttle around 25 to 45 mph, that flush is the first step.
The V8s take 0W-20 while the 4.3L takes 5W-30, all dexos1 licensed. Eight quarts for the V8s surprises first-time owners at the register.
Plugs run 97,500 miles and coolant five years or 150,000; between those, routine cost is mostly oil, rotation, and brakes.
05 / Cost outlook
Estimated from this schedule over five years or 60,000 miles of normal driving. Parts, labor rates, location, and condition all move the total; treat these as planning figures.

08 / Common questions
The published interval is every 7,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under severe conditions such as short trips, towing, dust, or extreme temperatures, the interval drops to 5,000 miles.
Every available engine, the 4.3L V6 EcoTec3 (LV3) and the 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 (L83) and the 6.2L V8 EcoTec3 (L86), uses a timing chain. There is no scheduled timing belt replacement.
4.3L V6 EcoTec3 (LV3): 5W-30, 6 quarts with filter. 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 (L83): 0W-20, 8 quarts with filter. 6.2L V8 EcoTec3 (L86): 0W-20, 8 quarts with filter. Confirm the grade printed in the owner's manual before buying.
The schedule calls for spark plugs every 97,500 miles.
Plan on automatic transmission fluid every 97,500 miles, or 45,000 miles under severe use. Severe covers towing, plowing, and sustained hot-climate hauling.
Engine coolant is due every 150,000 miles. The specified coolant is Dexcool (orange).
The driveline adds its own fluids: differential gear oil and, where fitted, transfer case fluid. They are inexpensive services with long intervals under normal use, and much shorter ones under towing or off-road duty. The schedule table lists each with its interval.
Repeated trips under about five miles, extended idling, stop-and-go traffic in heat, dusty or gravel roads, towing, and sustained sub-freezing starts. If a few of those describe a typical week, use the severe column in the table above; most manufacturers write their fine print around exactly that kind of driving.
